Locking Tabs & Shipping Update October 01 2012, 0 Comments

Hello Friends,

Great news, the locking tabs have arrived and they work tremendously. Below are a few pictures of them in action (you'll notice I added a little branding to help identify the WineHive):

The tabs apply to the back side of the WineHive at each 3-part aluminum intersection. So intersections that have rubber feet do not need these tabs. They're really easy to install, and work best when your WineHive is positioned upright.

Make sure to push down on all of the aluminum and rubber parts before applying the tabs, to make sure that after they're applied and your WineHive is turned right side up, the front face will be nice and flush.

Here's the instruction card I'll be including:

At this point, we've shipped over half of all the Kickstarter orders, and expect to have the remaining units shipped by the end of next week. As of today, all new shipments will include these locking tabs, and for those of you that have already received your WineHive, expect your locking tabs to arrive separately in a small envelope.

We're finally in the home stretch! Thanks again for your patience.

Cheers,

John

Progress Update September 17 2012, 0 Comments

Hello Everyone,

As of last week, we have shipped about 1/3 of the total WineHive orders (from Kickstarter, winehive.com, and tinylightbulbs.com). As with most new products, it's been taking a bit longer than anticipated to iron out all the details. We resolved the rubber feet delay by creating a custom jig to ensure the parts were cut to the right length. It also took my anodizing factory a few weeks to allocate factory space and workers to help me pack and ship all these units. But now we're up and running and should be able to ship out another big chunk of orders this week.

Also, I designed a small clear adhesive piece to apply to the back of the WineHive, to keep the aluminum parts from sliding apart. These should be shipping to me by the end of this week, and will be shipped to all of you for free. I'll include them in all orders that have not shipped yet, and will ship separately for orders that have shipped. Here's what they look like, they adhere to the rear intersection of the parts, and all 3 round flaps fold down onto the parts to lock them together:

It's definitely been a chaotic past few months. There always seems to be a manufacturing delay with new products, but my factory and I have been working diligently to iron out all the wrinkles and deliver perfect WineHives to all of you. And we're getting close! We're approaching the final stretch here.

I know you're all anxious to receive your WineHive, and I ask for just a little more patience as we finalize these last details and pack and ship these remaining orders.

Thanks,

John

WineHive Shipping Update August 31 2012, 0 Comments

Hello Everyone,

We're off to a great start, and have already shipped out hundreds of WineHives. Many of you have already received your WineHive, and the rest of you will be receiving them shortly.

We did have a minor delay with the cutting of the rubber feet last week, which prevented us from packing up units for a few days. But we're back up and running now and should have all of the units packed up in the next week or two.

To show my appreciation for all of your patience and support, I'm including FREE rubber feet with ALL of your WineHive orders.

Have a great Labor Day Weekend!

Cheers,

John

Production Update July 18 2012, 2 Comments

Hello Everyone,

I am pleased to announce that the WineHive is well into production. The aluminum parts, rubber feet, and outer packaging are all being manufactured. Everything should be complete in the first week of August, so I should be able to begin shipping orders the second week of August.

I apologize for the delays, but we had to make a few minor tweaks to the tooling to get the parts just right. I wanted to make sure I deliver a perfect product to all of you, and I think you'll be happy with the results.

Thanks again for your patience and support, and I'll be sure to keep everyone posted.

Cheers,

John

Pre-Production Samples June 27 2012, 0 Comments

Hello Everyone,

I have received the pre-production samples of the WineHive, and they came out great. They fit nicely together and the anodized finish looks flawless. Have a look:

So overall, the parts fit very nicely. Some parts are slightly looser than others, but the overall WineHive will still function perfectly. Adding the rubber corner pieces will also help tighten the connection points where needed.

I received 2 packs of new samples, and created a few different configurations to show all of you. A lot of people have been asking for a complete listing of all the "closed" configurations that can be made with various packs, and so here are a few, and I'll provide more shortly. I included a couple "open" configurations also, as a reference:

The classic 5-bottle "open" starter pack (above), made with 1 pack. Also makes this 3-bottle closed configuration (below):

The classic 9-bottle "open" configuration, made with 2 packs:

And here are some of the different closed configurations that can be made with 2 packs, all of which hold 6 bottles:

As for the vertical limit of the WineHive, it can go pretty tall:

And it's surprisingly stable at this height. Here's a 40-bottle WineHive I built with the previous looser samples. It's about 29 inches tall by about 18 inches wide. This one's even taller:

This one is about 48 inches tall, and is still surprisingly stable, but would definitely need to be wider or built against a wall for support. If you're looking to build a wine room or wine cellar with the WineHive, it can definitely be done. Feel free to email me if you're interested in something big like this. I've already received several requests for custom wine rooms and cellars, so I'll have these details worked out soon.

Otherwise, I'll follow up with a more complete configuration chart shortly, including half packs and larger orders. Also, many of you have expressed interest in upgrading your Kickstarter pledges to make larger closed configurations, such as the 15-bottle WineHive made with 4.5 packs, so I'll address this in the next couple days.

Regarding production, I'm just about ready to pull the trigger on the first production run. I expect this to happen by the end of the week. It's a 3-4 week lead time, so I should be shipping out orders towards the end of July. It's a little later than I originally intended, but the most important thing is delivering perfect WineHives to all of you, and we are definitely getting close!

Thanks again for your support and patience, and I'll keep all of you posted on things to come. Feel free to leave comments or email me if you have any questions or comments.

Cheers,

John

Production Update June 14 2012, 1 Comment

Things are coming along great on the production side. I'm making one last tooling modification to tighten the fit of the parts, and will have revised samples later this week. Here are the anodized samples:

Notice the feet on the bottom? Here's a closer look:

Yes, the WineHive has feet! And they can also double as end-caps for the other corners. These feet are 3D-printed prototypes, and the production feet will likely match the light grey color of the satin-anodized aluminum. I'll be using a rubber-type material, which will have plenty of traction and cushion against kitchen countertops and other surfaces. I designed the feet to work for both types of configurations, including the "corner bottom" configurations (above), and the "flat bottom" configurations (below):

I'm finalizing pricing and material on the feet now, and expect to begin tooling shortly. Here's another look at the feet:

I should have the aluminum parts finalized this week, allowing me to begin production by early next week. The sampling process did take a few days longer than expected, but I'm pleased with how everything turned out.

Overall, we're making tremendous progress, and every new sample looks better than the last. Especially now with the addition of the feet, I'm confident the WineHive will turn out remarkably for all you. Thanks again for your patience and support, and I'll send out another update soon.
